Competencies

Domains of competence overlap

Competence is the capacity to apply the best available ethics, evidence, knowledge, skills and experience within the work context.

Outdoor health work requires a mix of outdoor competence, ecological competence, therapeutic competence, participant knowledge and self knowledge. Outdoor health services might employ individuals with all of these competencies, or use teams of people with different backgrounds and strengths that work together to deliver services.

Practitioners come to the field through these competency pathways. For example, via counselling, youth work, psychology, social work, outdoor education, adventure guiding, ecology, occupational therapy or physiotherapy.
